Oskaloosa Schools has formally submitted letters of interest to two Iowa athletic conferences as part of an ongoing evaluation of the best long-term conference placement for its student activities programs.
District leaders recently sent letters to both the South Central Conference and the Southeast Conference expressing interest in potential membership opportunities.
The outreach reflects the district’s continued focus on ensuring that conference affiliation supports strong competition, positive student experiences, and opportunities for students to grow as leaders through athletics, fine arts, and other co-curricular programs.
“Our responsibility is to make thoughtful decisions that support students both now and in the future,” said Activities Director Jamie Jacobs. “Conference alignment plays an important role in the experience students have through activities, and we want to ensure those opportunities remain strong for years to come.”
In the letter to the South Central Conference, district leaders noted that Oskaloosa’s enrollment, competitive balance, and geographic location could make it a strong fit within the conference structure. The district also highlighted its commitment to sportsmanship, leadership development, and positive competition environments.
A separate letter to the Southeast Conference expressed interest in potential membership beginning in fall 2028. District leaders cited the conference’s tradition of competitive excellence and strong school communities as values that align with Oskaloosa’s mission to “engage all students to embrace the power of learning.”
Oskaloosa High School Principal Jeff Kirby said the district’s activities programs are built around helping students develop skills that extend far beyond the playing field.
“Participation in athletics and activities helps students grow as teammates, learners, and leaders,” Jacobs said. “We want to ensure our conference partnerships continue to support those opportunities.”
No decisions have been made regarding future conference membership, and the district will continue conversations with conference leadership and member schools as part of the evaluation process.
“Our focus remains on what is best for students,” Jacobs said. “We appreciate the thoughtful consideration from both conferences as we explore the next chapter for Oskaloosa activities.”
